TRFD Inaugural Pub Crawl - A Great Success

Our Inaugural Pub Crawl Fundraiser yesterday was a tremendous success! Because of the generosity of our participants, prize donors and sponsoring local taverns, we have raised close to $8000. All the money raised will go toward purchasing supplies, equipment and expenses supporting our upcoming dental mission trip in Los Cacaos, Haiti. Any money over and above our needs will go toward a general fund supporting the missionary work of Sr. Maria Marciano in this impoverished area of the world.

I am amazed at the generosity and support from our small community (and that great Luxemburg crew!) and grateful for the hard work from entire Two Rivers Family Dental team. A special thanks to Tracy B for her drive and follow through (even playing injured) and Cheri from Lee’s Inn to provide the venue for the event.

Because of your generosity, those who are most needy will receive some relief from ongoing dental infections and pain. They will know that they are not forgotten and that there are others who feel their pain and care enough to be willing to help. We look forward to making this an annual event and will return to Haiti as long as the need is there we are able.

Thank you Two Rivers! We are humbled by your support and sincerely appreciate your generosity!

There is one dentist per 100,000 people in Haiti. Thanks to Sister Maria and her team, lay volunteers, Haitian workers and our team of caring providers, we triaged over 500 patients, treated 312 patients, extracted 538 diseased teeth, performed 29 restorations and 9 dental cleanings during our February 2018 Dental Mission in Haiti. Our goal for 2019 is to treat 100 people per day. Help us meet that goal. Pre-register today our First Annual Pub Crawl to raise funds for our 2019 Dental Mission in Haiti.

Dr. Hansen’s Dental Mission In Haiti

Dr. Hansen’s Dental Mission in Haiti
Dr. Chris Hansen is partnering with the Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Green Bay, Sister Maria Marciano Projects, to develop a new permanent dental clinic in a remote region of central Haiti called Los Cacaos. Because of the rugged terrain and lack of infrastructure, residents in the area have little access to medical and dental care. In fact, overall, there is only 1 dentist for every 100,000 people in Haiti. Dr. Hansen will travel with Dr. Paul Feit, an assistant, a hygienist, two auxiliary team members and set up operations in Los Cacaos from February 16–25, 2018.

Who is Sister Maria Marciano?
Sister Maria is a Brazilian Catholic nun who came to the Dominican Republic in 1992 and began her charitable work in the town of Vallejuelo. In Brazil, she earned degrees in civil engineering, hydrology engineering, agronomy, veterinary science, economics, and business administration. She believes a sustainable society requires roads, clean water, housing/schools, academic/health education, agricultural/manufacturing productivity, and fair trade.

After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Sister Maria decided to expand her work into neighboring Los Cacaos, Haiti, which is mountainous and remote. In this region, people often live on one meal of rice and beans per day. Los Cacaos had a contaminated water supply, which led to a high incidence of cholera. Her efforts since the earthquake have focused on clean water, schools, and roads.

Resident Spotlight: From A Small Town In Wisconsin, Dr. Chris Hansen Is Bringing Change To His Patients.

"My biggest take away from the Texas Center, from a clinical standpoint, is the joint stability. As dentists, we tend to be very technical. We look at the teeth, we have a TMJ specialist look at the joint, and we have a physical therapist look at the muscles. But to restore health you have to restore the balance of the system as a whole."

Dr. Chris Hansen practices in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Outside of his dental practice, Dr. Hansen is active in leadership roles at both the state and national levels with the ADA and AGD.

He originally went to university with the mind send of pharmacy school. However, he was quickly drawn to dentistry because of the ability to become an entrepreneur within your own practice. And so, he attended and graduated dental school at Marquette University. He now practices in the small town of Two Rivers, Wisconsin and keeps very busy. Dr. Hansen is an alumnus of the Schuster Center's Management Program and really wants to get back to what he learned there - a relationship based practice with more personal services. This is part of what lead him to the Texas Center.

Dr. Hansen has gone through the Pankey Continuum, many seminars with Kois, and intro courses with Spear. "The biggest difference between those and the Texas Center," says Dr. Hansen, "is we go from learning, straight to applying and doing." At the Texas Center, the students complete, at least, one full mouth restoration case during their residency. "The Texas Center is intentionally made to take what you've learned from the shelf and put your hands on it," says Dr. Hansen. "There's a significant amount of learning you do when you have to put a presentation together and defend your case in front of all your colleagues."

The Texas Center has helped Dr. Hansen see the possibilities of helping people.

"In a small-town environment, we're able to offer services that are so unique, nobody else can replicate it anywhere else."

In fact, Dr. Hansen had a patient referred to him by another general dentist who was unable to help her. She suffered from facial pain and headaches, to which her dentist's response was to put her in a night guard. This relieved her symptoms at night, however the second she took it out the pain would be back. "Two years ago, I would have had no clue what to do. I would have done the same thing, put a night guard in her mouth," says Dr. Hansen. But because of his training at the Texas Center, he immediately knew what to do and was able to communicate it to the patient whose response was, "I wish I had found you fifteen years ago!"

It has been an honor having Dr. Hansen go through our residency. We have enjoyed working with him, as well as his auxiliary staff. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors!
